Mandy, I was diagnosed with SD in my mid twenties and I am now 54. An optometrist who speiciales in low vision can help you tremendously. I completed a BBA degree with this condition and have worked continuously. The only adaptative assistance I require form my employer is a 21" monitor and a laptop (I actually got along fine for years without the laptop). I have taken to wearing my bioptics (glasses with telescopes mounted behind the lenses) most of time at work, so my condition is out of the cloest. I also drive (even though my wife would like to see that part of my life end)and lead a fairly normal life. That is not to say I don't have any frustration. I am often frustrated with my inability to do normal daily tasks properly or quickly, but I thatnk God that I have the tolls to allow me to function daily.
